Momentum Builds For Season of Giving

Kind and cheerful, generous and timely. Surely they were some of Santa’s helpers who arrived in two cars that pulled into our parking lot within minutes of each other. As a non-profit organization with 501(c) status, we rely solely on donations to be able to rescue and care for more than 200 dogs and cats any given day. This weekend, employees of Pacific Compensation Insurance in Agoura Hills brought so many offerings that extra people were recruited to assist with unloading. 

Stacks of wet and dry food, containers of cat litter, boxes of newspaper pages and bundles of bags soon appeared. All are wonderful, usable gifts! Ann-Marie Dorian explained that funds for the items were raised by recycling efforts at their company. Dorian Dreher said numerous staffers add their own money, too, and enjoy lending support throughout the year.

Ready to Say Hello, Hoping to be Chosen

Pet Adoption Fund event @ Petco - Canoga Park

It’s difficult to describe … with as much variety as holiday songs, as many voices as a winter concert, and overlapping tones creating a one-of-a-kind audio experience. It’s the sounds made by the big group of little dogs we bring to mobile adoption events. Attend our next one this Saturday (Dec. 13) at Petco in Canoga Park from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. to hear it for yourself! A sign will announce our location outside, while the unique noise is sure to make folks wonder what all the excitement is about.

Confident, curious or happy canines will be louder as they greet passers-by or ask for attention. Sometimes the goal is simply getting in the last word, er, “woof.” Put in a special playpen, the pack provides squeals of delight during playtime, or barks and grumbles during friendly competition to be seen by potential adopters. Some want to be petted, some need to go potty, others beg for a treat or a bit of whatever a visitor is eating. From high-pitched howling or funny grunts to at-peace panting or quiet sleeping, hints of their personalities are on display.

If you like what you hear or see, decide with heart and head if you’re ready for a furry family member. On-site volunteers can answer questions about the process, and give details about any dog. The forecast is sunny skies and refreshing cool weather — a great time to stop by!

Updates Reveal Continuing Success

Pictures of little dogs in big, soft beds abound (cuteness factor = very high!), but seeing that image of Snickers is so pleasing. The small guy with no teeth and thus his tongue hanging out, was here a while and often overlooked, before someone special saw past those physical issues and adopted the sweet angel. At least five years later, we were recently emailed photos of Snickers relaxing peacefully.

Here are some more wonderful updates:
* Oreo (formerly Chispita) reports: “My mom is finding out I love car rides! We drove to pick up my girl a couple times last week. I also visited grandma’s house! Her Chihuahua loves to play with me. Big hugs and sloppy kisses!”
* Renamed Potato, Fin the Pug is “very happy, walks on a leash, is now house-trained, and comes to work with me every day.”
* Amber the Min Pin got to wear a hot-dog costume this Halloween.
* Previously easily startled, Friskie the tabby cat now seeks attention and sleeps on her mom’s bed.

Some of our volunteers have been glad to cross paths with past placements or their guardians:
* At a local pet store, Hazel’s dad was buying food for the Staffie/Lab mix.
* Madeline the Doberman was seen enjoying hiking trails in a neighboring county.
* An unforgettable pitbull, Vincent (formerly Chester), now living hours away, visited us this summer.
* After being returned, Silky/Cairn Terrier mix Happy got a second chance with a patient couple.
* After we helped administer eye medicine, Stripes the cat reunited with his caring humans.

Delightful Discoveries Happen Daily

Adorable stuffed toys don’t do it. A squeaky-squishy earns only mild interest. But young Cudi gets excited when a tennis ball bounces. He jumps high to make skillful grabs, then parades around proudly with each catch, changing a round of fetch into a keep-away game. By the way, Cudi figured out a hidden-treats puzzle in less than a minute. Learning more about habits of rescued pets here can be fun or surprising. 

More examples are: Tiny Calvin isn’t at all afraid of larger or tall people. Sandy the Shepherd tries to fit on a lap. Blind Benny greets strangers confidently. The Pointer-mix sisters are calmer and steal kisses when separated. Giant Titus is gentle and quiet.  Sweet, small Sadie and Lucky don’t mind wearing costumes. Furthermore, Dutch, Luke and Kai get along fine with cats. 

Speaking of cats, we now know Missy likes tummy rubs — unusual for felines. Coco will go crazy with moving feathers. Curious Marcela balances on narrow window sills with ease. Keyatee asks to be petted. Also, Angela and Bobby have become head-rubbing buddies.

JOIN US at the BARK IN THE PARK, OCT. 11th, 2014 EVENT!

Be Sure to Stop by our Booth!
Don’t miss this chance to see some of our wonderful, available dogs! It’s the perfect opportunity to meet a match, and learn more about our rescue. This Saturday (Oct. 11), we’ll bring a group to the annual “Bark in the Park” event in Thousand Oaks from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Small canines who will be on-site include chihuahuas/chi mixes named Lucky, Clyde, Bonnie, Harley, Harper and Chafiro, along with fuzzy and friendly Terrier mixes Rudolph and Boomer.

The impressive variety of little dogs also will feature Larry the Miniature Pinscher, Ryan the mini poodle, Sadie the Cairn Terrier, Chloe (Dachshund mix), as well as a wavy-haired Spaniel mix called Banjo. A volunteer who has been training Buster (Lhasa Apso/Corgi) is ready to answer questions about him and show some of his skills.

Medium-sized dogs that people can get to know are Tilly the Pitbull, Leah the sweet Siberian Husky, Tanner the exuberant Wheaten mix, plus one of three white-and-black Pointer sisters who need homes. Visitors are welcome, and inquiries are gladly received. If you can’t make it, please come to our regular, permanent location where the afore-mentioned orphans reside -- in addition to many more pets who are looking for forever guardians. – LK, volunteer
