FUNDS NEEDED for youngster's essential lessons

Like most puppies, Shammy has been both playful and naughty. His silly antics include sticking his face in the water bucket, picking up then tossing toys or bowls, and zooming around excitedly. Other habits include pushing aside his doggy roommates to greet people, jumping up on visitors and sometimes pulling on their clothes, arms or legs. We now know why this adorable Australian Shepherd/Blue Heeler boy is extra-challenged by obedience efforts: He is deaf. Hearing-impaired dogs are still highly trainable. They can learn body language/facial expressions, hand signals, certain touches and other strategies. Of course, success will take patience and commitment.
Please assist this very important effort to offer precious Shammy some specialized instruction ASAP! We can tell he's eager to please, loves attention and always wants to be a part of things. So matching Shammy's energy with directed behavior is the goal! Both breeds in his background have a history of herding instinct—the natural desire to move livestock by nipping at their heels, which may extend to other pets/animals or even children. Channeling Shammy's activity level in a positive way will definitely increase his adoptability.

Please help us help him by going to the link below to make a donation through PayPal.  No amount is too small.  Please include a note, or mention “Shammy."  Checks can be mailed to the address listed below.  > DONATE

Cats From Big to Small--Enjoy Them All!

Fuzzy babies here are as cute as can be. That includes kittens needing homes: Taylor (buff tabby boy), Messina (black, male); Suey, a tabby girl with white markings, shown at left; Loggins (orange tabby boy); Dori (gray tabby with white); and sisters Hope and Faith, both black and white. With their varied colors and personalities, these felines have tons of potential and are sure to grow into wonderful cats.

“A kitten is in the animal world what a rosebud is in the garden.” ̶  Robert Southey

“A kitten is chiefly remarkable for rushing about like mad at nothing whatever, and generally stopping before it gets there.” ̶  Agnes Repplier

Some cats have stayed somewhat small compared to others. Fall in love with sweet Orangecicle, beautiful Ebony, unique Gypsy (Manx), young Athena or shy Cheerios and petite Boogie, girls who each have extra toes. Also available are Zeus, Mr. Kitty Boy and Mugatu, big guys who are white and gray; affectionate orange/white tabby Ramsey and gentle, black-haired Albert; friendly Lily, pleasantly plump; plus larger females Bebe, shown at right; Smudge, Baby (Siamese mix) and Hestia (a Tortie and best buddy of Mr. Kitty Boy). ̶  L.K., volunteer

Trying to Turn the Tide of Displaced Pets

Numerous cute puppies are available.
Not a day goes by without requests to take in dogs or cats. As a no-kill shelter, we can only save another if one is adopted so space becomes available. Some of our newest animals are due for some good luck. Vicky the sweet Vizsla mix had been hit by a car. Butterscotch the friendly Staffie and Roxie the cute Terrier were lost and sad strays. A pregnant cat now has four babies (three are still available). Young Jake (Shep/Lab) was left behind when his owners moved. A pregnant Chihuahua mix was deserted at a construction site. Six Kelpie/Collie pups were the third generation born at a ranch before someone realized the dire need to say “no more” and recruited assistance to fix (sterilize) the whole group.
Shorty is a short-haired Saint Bernard.

We know times are tough when purebred dogs become homeless, too, like our residents Spike the English Bulldog, Quinn the miniature poodle, Jackson the German Shepherd, Parker the Papillon, Shorty the St. Bernard, Chinook and Bella (Siberian Huskies), Susie the chocolate Lab, Shangola the Lhasa Apso, Madeline the Doberman Pinscher and more. Visit an impressive variety and choose a match! –L.K, volunteer

Not So Fast! These Dogs Like A Less-Active Lifestyle

Stitch hopes to be adopted soon.
Bambi is a sweet Min-Pin mix.
Springtime is all about taking time to smell the flowers. Some dogs here remind us to stop rushing around and just take it all in. For example, Stitch the shy Lhasa Apso mix, Molly the affectionate black terrier, Rusty the Vizsla, Tiffany the white Skye Terrier/Westie (a delicate “prancing princess”), Butch the Tibetan Mastiff mix, Ernie the Pit Bull mix and Fritz (Chow Chow mix) are each older and enjoy slower strolls.
Vanilla (Labrador Retriever/Shepherd) is a larger, peach-colored girl who waddles. Bow is a big Treeing Walker Coonhound mix who seems to sway, while Dante is a brindle boy with a limp. Ethan the black Chow mix and Chance II (Canaan/Border Collie) simply prefer shorter distances. Tiny Torrie the terrier mix likes being held, and Bambi the pretty Min-Pin mix likes to sit on someone’s lap.

Many chihuahuas at our rescue shelter appreciate a leisurely walk because they’re so small, including Lucky who is overweight. Others encourage a relaxed pace because their personalities are mellow/super sweet/easygoing, such as Preston the cute Cockapoo, Presley the house-trained beagle mix, and Rudolph the friendly white terrier mix. – L.K., volunteer

Unique Kennel Mates & Bevy of Brunettes Available

Fritz and Lucy are eager to meet you.

When a new baby came, Lucy’s family gave her up. After more than a decade being a loyal companion, Fritz was left at a shelter by those he knew and trusted. On paper, recent arrivals Fritz and Lucy seem like opposites. He’s a 12-year-old, mellow dude with an orange, fluffy mane, and she’s a 1.5-year-old, bouncy pup with short black hair. Still, the Siberian Husky/Chow Chow and Labrador Retriever mix get along swell. They’ve even been seen play-wrestling with each other. Watch a video of these two dogs here (below). Both enjoy walks with volunteers, but Lucy can still be timid around strangers. She’s one of numerous black dogs awaiting adoption.     Other wonderful black dogs here ready for a second chance include Ethan, a calm gentleman who is part Chow Chow, part Labrador Retriever (shown above right); Bonnie, a sweet Labrador Retriever whose hair has a touch of waves; Sonic, a cute male Labrador Retriever mix who gives kisses; Butch, a small terrier paired with a buddy; Satin, a young and petite female Terrier; Peter Pickles, the house-trained Dachshund mix; Chrissy (also known as Sheba), a precious medium-sized black Lab/Terrier; Mama Mia, a Labrador/Collie with dashes of white; and Molly, the adult Terrier mix with memorable ears.

Super Siblings, Bonded Buddies Offer Extra Love

Billie and Andy were worried, young boys with nowhere left to go, when their owner decided to give them up.  Bonded siblings that these Border Collie/Labrador Retriever mixes are (seen at left), Billie always makes sure his brother is nearby while out on walks--nuzzling his muzzle to be sure. They are among different duos at our shelter that play together and must be adopted together.
Did you know that the Obama sisters, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid are here? Yes, we have dogs named after the President’s daughters, as well as for those famous robbers played by Robert Redford and Paul Newman in a movie. Sasha and Malia are Mini Pinscher pups (shown below right); Butch and Sundance are small-sized pals. Also awaiting adoption are Gina and her brother Dolby (AKA Sweet Pea and Bubba), gorgeous Akita/Shepherd mixes; seniors Brittany and Chrissy; plus good friends Jack and Mama Mia.
On the cats side, needing homes are sweet sisters Lily and Sophie, shy brother and sister Siamese mixes Shiloh and Chloe, plus a threesome named Lucy, Mackenzie and Butterscotch. Do you have room in your heart and home for more than one pet? Contact us to meet these “marvelous multiples.”
