Fantastic Follow-up to Successful Placement

Thanks for sharing your story!
Here is a wonderful letter from a recent adopter:
Hi folks.
I just wanted to say thank you again for allowing me to adopt Kopie. He is a real joy, and one of the best-mannered dogs I've ever met. He is extremely intelligent and very affectionate. He is great company for my 84-year-old mother, and follows her around the house and sleeps at the foot of her bed. I take him for long walks and play fetch with him. He loves to bring the ball back to me and place it at my feet. Here are a couple of photos of us together. Please feel free to publish this or add it to your website as a success story. Adopting Kopie was a very easy process, and your kind and professional staff were very helpful.

Sincerely yours,
Brian / Los Angeles, CA

Special-Needs Intakes Require Extra TLC and Financial Commitment

Teri's glaucoma caused a lot of hurt.
Mickey is adjusting to having 3 legs.
Both Teri the dog and Mickey the cat are recovering after recent traumatic injuries. Teri the Jack Russell Terrier sat shaking at a city shelter with a very swollen, painful eye before her arrival at our rescue.  Unfortunately, the eye could not be saved, and had to be removed, but now she's bouncy and better. Meanwhile, a rear leg of the young marmalade tabby we named Mickey was so damaged it had to be amputated. His confidence grows daily.
A few others with physical challenges who are here awaiting adoption are: Amos the deaf Siamese cat, with hyperthyroidism and a stomach mass; Gracie the Calico mix (mostly blind but can find her food or litter box); Sampson the friendly orange-and-white female (on insulin); Little Bit, an older female feline with diabetes; and Misiu, a gentle Ragamuffin male with mouth lesions.

On the dog side is Remmy, a little guy with failing back legs; Benny the blind Min-Pin (diabetes); Champ the Chow Chow/Golden Retriever with a bad hip and limp; and Sparky Boy, a Peke on meds for seizures. Surgery survivors include Jasper and Kirby (each has one eye now); Kellie and Otis (each had a torn ACL); and Lenny, a Fox Terrier/Chihuahua (healed broken leg).

More than ever, the number of our medical cases are at all-time high, while monetary donations
are at all-time low. Your support is much appreciated, and will assist us in reaching out to more in need. To donate, please visit

Give Homeless Pets Hope and Happiness

Meow! I'm Sari, only 5 months old.
Meow! I'm Nokia, a Siamese mix.

As we embrace the holiday season with wishes of peace, joy and love, we thank every donor whose contributions provide haven, hearts and help for all of our “furry residents.” That includes three kittens rounded up after escaping a box with no lid left near a busy street: Sari the Tortie-colored girl; Nokia the female Siamese mix; and Sunrise, an affectionate male orange tabby. Each will be only five months old this December.
Meow! I'm Sunrise, a male kitten.
Although this year is ending, the necessity of animal rescue never does. Remi is a handsome purebred Vizsla whose life was in jeopardy at the pound. He’s safe now at our shelter, awaiting adoption. Come by soon to meet this medium-sized dog who longs to be someone’s loyal companion. Another recent intake is Brandon the young German Shepherd. Constantly tied-up as a puppy, he has abundant energy and eagerness. Luckily, we were able to intervene when Brandon was being taken to the pound.
Just like each month in 2013, each dog and cat here has something different to offer. Find out which ones could be your next family member! – L.K., volunteer (UPDATE: all adopted!)

Faithful Fellow Deserves Similar Devotion

The bond between a young dog named Jason and a kind stranger is powerful proof of canine loyalty. Living on the streets in a bad neighborhood, the Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler mix was often beaten and terrorized, resulting in a broken leg. He always lingered near the home of a lady who sometimes provided food, but was not able to  take him in. Distraught at his obvious suffering, she asked a friend to get Jason and call rescues. Only Pet Adoption Fund stepped in, providing medical care then placing him with wonderful people. However, Jason soon escaped his new, secure surroundings. He clearly was on a determined journey, because with each sighting the distance increased. Finally, on the third day, Jason approached and followed someone walking her dog. Tired and hungry, and with an injured leg, he sat on their porch during heavy rain. Able to get contact information from microchip details, the woman contacted us. Jason was by then at least 20 miles away from his adopters’ location. Amazingly, he was on a street that would lead straight to the home of the Good Samaritan who gave him a few meals not too long ago. We know Jason will be very devoted to the owner he gets to know, who will share lasting love.

Big Beauty Seeks Strong, Savvy, Sensitive Owner

No doubt about it, Samantha the young Saint Bernard is large and lovely. But depression often sinks in when she realizes being the “one and only” of a new owner who will be a “forever friend” is still just a dream. When still a puppy, Samantha lost the only home she ever had when she got dumped at the shelter. Not much later, she lost the only family she still had when her brother (and kennel roommate) got adopted. Soon, Sam lost the only way she could possibly be saved, too: more time to be seen as available and chosen by a special someone. Thank goodness, Pet Adoption Fund rescued this dog just before euthanasia.
Samantha enjoys walks, tummy rubs, squeaky toys and running in circles or back and forth with a playmate. She needs a household without other pets or kids. We’re hoping to place Sam with someone familiar with the St. Bernard breed and tendencies—someone strong enough to handle her smartly and safely, yet sensitive enough to always be kind and patient as she learns expectations. If you qualify, please contact us to arrange a meeting! Watch her video here:

Our Wonderful Cats Wonder How Long it Takes?!

Angie will roll around for a belly rub.
We are always surprised and disappointed when visitors say they didn’t know we have cats and kittens on-site, available for adoption.
In fact, both a cat and dog have appeared in our logo and on the side of our building for decades! At any given time, many cats of different ages, sizes, personalities and colors are here to see, get to know, and take home if it’s a match! That includes numerous singles, siblings, friends, pairs, some who must be your only pet, plus a few special-needs cases.
Please contact our cat specialist Julie, and she'll be happy to assist you with choices.  Please call (818) 307-3326.

If you can’t own one, please consider volunteering. The kitties love attention, brushing, cuddling or playing with toys.
Socializing the more shy cats boosts their chances of being adopted.

Gentle, lovely Layla (grey/brown tabby), charming and chubby Breezy (male), or sweet Angie (black and white) would each be “purr-fect” for an older person. To meet Baloo (boy) or Quinn (girl), both light-orange babies, call Megan at (818) 601-6916.   Please keep us in mind when you are ready to adopt a furry friend.

For Future Generations, Neuter and Spay Must be the Way

All of us growing kids need homes ASAP! Can you help?
Our hearts sank when we peeked in the cardboard box. Yes, the fuzzy puppies are adorable. No, these mixed-breed babies don’t know their existence was unplanned, unwanted or both. Another reminder of the pet overpopulation problem—a continuing dilemma. Spaying and neutering is the solution, but without question it’s just not happening, or not happening enough! Too many young, well-behaved companion animals are among millions euthanized every year because shelters and rescues don’t have room, numerous owners and breeders are irresponsible, and there simply aren’t enough homes. So each week that passes, this situation becomes more worrisome. These little Jindo/Labrador Retriever girls and boys have no names at this point, but lots of potential. Hopefully, the mommas won’t have another litter. Hopefully, the outcome will be loving families and successful adoptions, not more sad statistics. In this case, the careless actions of one irresponsible owner with two Jindo females has plenty of people trying to save and place 10 puppies. Spaying/neutering has health and behavioral benefits, as well as low-cost options.

Update 10-29-12:  All pups have been adopted.
