New Pet Connections Happen if Meant to Be

Upon first meeting, Jax didn’t go to a man calling his name. A walk together turned the tide; not much later, the guy held the cute Westie close to pose for a photo with his new family member. Fate also intervened for Monte, a senior Yorkie who stood out by standing still and quiet during a kennel tour. Turns out, both his age and demeanor were exactly what an elderly lady desired. In a recent email update, she calls him “the best man I’ve had in my life.”

The personalities of dogs named Sammy and Cooper were likewise key factors to getting adopted. Potential owners noticed Sammy wasn’t really into toys, but also noticed and really liked his mellow behavior. As for Cooper, after getting frequent interest for his size and energy, the youngster was soon chosen by someone who loves his “joie de vivre” (joy of life/cheerful spirit).

Numerous cats at this rescue experience similar karma, whether it’s timing, luck or something else special.

New to the cats’ playroom, Gucci preferred to stay in corners. But days ago, the pretty young tabby approached, purred and charmed her way into a visitor’s heart. Weeks ago, Little Foot shared a space with three other babies. Defying the belief that black cats take longer to place, he was chosen over his adorable orange and gray roommates. Color can be a factor in terms of what people want; a month ago, a couple came in looking for a black-and-white kitty. Tess stood out from a group of look-alikes by quickly jumping onto the woman’s lap. After three years here, she’s another success story.

Kiko’s match happened much quicker. The formerly shy kitten jumped onto a door screen with a loud meow to be seen by passers-by, who decided to adopt her the next day. Read about many available felines needing homes by visiting our Cattery page!

Meet The Sisters! Our Version Of The Pointer Sisters!

Juicy(L), Gucci, Coco, Chanel

Cute, adorable, playful, goofy, sweet, don't begin to describe the four Pointer/Terrier sisters (Juicy, Gucci, Coco, Chanel) currently residing at Pet Adoption Fund.

When the plea to save their lives surfaced the internet, the volunteers of a high kill shelter, a remote county shelter in the heart of the desert, were optimistic that the sisters will undoubtedly be rescued by animal lovers in the no-kill rescue community and the plea will surely have a happy ending. After all, who would not want those happy little goofy faces!  But sadly that was not the case for these sisters. The shelter plea to save those precious four lives went unanswered. The clock was ticking. Their days were numbered.

But thanks to one very special volunteer at that shelter, always working around the clock to save lives, she reached out to Pet Adoption Fund, in hopes of saving at least two out of the four, and hoping for a miracle last minute public adoption for the remaining two.

As busy as we were and always are, we could not possibly ignore their plea, but how could we consider only two, when the lives of the other two remain in jeopardy? The answer was...No! We have to take all four...and we are so happy we did.  All four are currently housed together at our kennel, and are as happy and playful and sweet as they can be.  Juicy and Gucci are a bit timid, Chanel is the pack leader, and Coco is the assistant leader.

All four are altered now, vaccinated, chipped, and are ready for their new life journeys. They can be separated, if there is a doggy friend at the new home, otherwise they need to go in pairs, or we would consider one, if the new guardian is a home body. Heartbreak to Hope: Second Chance For Success

“Why can’t I be taken out? Am I next? Can I be chosen, too? I want attention also!
 Don’t forget about me!” 

Whenever anyone walked by or entered the room, the German Shepherd puppy would begin her barking pleas. She often stood on her rear toes to make sure she was seen as well as heard. But if someone ventured closer, they’d see the “IN RECOVERY” sign on Mary Anne's kennel. They’d see a very friendly, but very thin young dog with barely a few patches of hair.

This desperate girl was found abandoned with a horrible skin ailment. She was confused, in severe discomfort and required isolation to ensure quicker, complete healing. Mary Anne needed anti-parasitic medications, a strict yet optimistic food plan, as well as treatment to ease itching, inflammation or secondary skin infections. Waiting was the toughest part for a growing pup who just wanted to play and give or get some love.

Immediate and continuous good care has made a notable difference. It's an amazing transformation! View her Before and After pictures here. Mary Anne is now at a healthy weight with a full coat, has favorite toys and shows lots of energy and curiosity during walks. People notice her natural sweetness and size. She has a black diamond mark on her forehead, plus one missing ear tip. However, this tale of woe has become a wagging tail — literally!
Sure enough, the biggest question at this point is: What lucky person or family will adopt her? Because without question, Mary Anne has recovered and is ready. — LK, volunteer

Thank Goodness for Simple Pleasures

Shoelaces. Feathers. Tiny fake mice. Small plastic balls with bells inside. It doesn’t take much to get most cats interested in playing with such toys. Especially if it’s moving, they’re likely to swat, stalk then pounce, bite or roll around with it. We have numerous kittens at the rescue now.

The other day a shiny, crinkly toy was tossed into one group. The quickest grabbed it and the rest crazily ran around following — up, down and all around until it was dropped. Many of the babies can’t be touched yet, but moving a finger toward them gets them curious, tilting their heads, eyes growing big as they climb or reach out a paw to get closer.

Speaking of dogs, plenty of the rescue’s adoptables have favorite activities, too. Shannon, Sonic and Foxtrot are boys who love fetching or catching stuffed toy basketballs. Otis likes belly-crawling on grass. Jonesy will happily splash in a small pool put in the play yards on hot days. We know Charity is happy when she zips around in tight circles. Meanwhile, Mary Anne the German Shepherd puppy and Foxy the senior German Shepherd, both enjoy watching their toys float in water. Thank goodness for simple pleasures! — LK, volunteer

Unusual Traits Will Make You Look Twice

Wait — is that Dachshund missing a leg? From a distance, a small red dog is being walked. It seems to tilt down and sideways with each step, but is moving at a steady pace. It’s Daisy! Despite her handicap (it’s believed she was hit by a car, leading to an amputation), she gets around and even jumps just fine. Such animals called “tripods” definitely have to try harder than “regular” pets to do regular things.

Mickey the three-legged cat is also available. He seems to lay down all day just out of reach. But a peek through a window after closing often reveals him leaping from high hiding places to eat or drink on the ground, then climbing straight up very fast on the other side!
Other cats here get attention for their looks, too. Lily the tabby is so round, joking people like to guess she swallowed a bowling ball. Adorable and Cheerios have extra toes on their front paws, like tiny thumbs; they’re known as polydactyl cats, or “mitten kittens.” Guests ask to shake their hands. Meanwhile, three male cats have a crinkly ear across from their normal ear: Earl, Butterscotch and Edward.

Both tips of Bradley the German Shepherd’s cute ears curl forward, unlike the breed’s typical erect ears. His face coloring kind of gives him the appearance of having thick eyebrows. Bradley, Roxie and Foxtrot are all big Shepherds who probably near a pony in size.

Roxy and Black Jack (Poms), Rusty, Ethan and Champ are among our fuzziest dogs. However, shy Lizzy takes the prize. Her longer, wavy, black-and-white hair prompts questions: Is there a dog under all that? Is that a new or different kind of sheepdog? And we can’t forget Brooke, a sweet Belgian Tervuren with distinctive tufts of blonde hair sticking out beneath her eyes. We’ve heard, “Are those real or pasted on?” and “How did that happen?”

Online searches for pets are convenient, but it’s more interesting meeting them live and up close!

*FOXTROT* The Neglected & Abandoned Shepherd

Oh My God! Oh My God! That was our reaction when we first laid eyes on this severely neglected and abandoned Shepherd we now call Foxtrot. Judging by the condition he was in, it was evident that this poor soul was confined somewhere, chained, and left to be consumed by external parasites, covering literally every inch of his body, including his eyes, nose, and ears.

Of course the first question that comes to mind is: Why? Why would anyone acquire a dog and end up treating it this way? Why? Although we will never know why...where...what or who, but one thing we do know is that life has not been kind to this stunning and regal looking Shepherd.

But luckily, this boy found his way to us and now we are doing everything possible to change the world for this beautiful angel, and show him that not all humans are evil....but most do care...we care!

Foxtrot has already been to our vet, has been groomed, and is currently receiving all the medical care that he needs, and will continue to do so until he is healthy, happy, and pain free.
