The countdown is on! Don’t miss this once-annual chance to adopt a Chihuahua, Chihuahua mix or a cat older than age 1 for a special reduced fee of $50 per animal. This enticing, wonderful offer is available THIS WEEKEND ONLY at Pet Adoption Fund, FRIDAY, SATURDAY AND SUNDAY (June 27, 28 and June 29, 2014) between our regular weekend hours of 1 to 5 p.m.

We are proud to be one of Southern California’s largest no-kill animal organizations. Non-profit rescues like ours need money to survive and continue our mission. However,
Marley is a marvelous, available cat.
along with supportive donations, another supremely significant goal — always— is placing animals into new homes. Please stop by this weekend to help us create more happy endings!

Cats and Chihuahuas are cute, loyal friends who don’t require large living spaces. The list could go on and on — but we don’t need to give you more reasons why they’re a promising choice for a pet. After, all, this is the perfect time to visit our rescue and choose a match yourself! — LK, volunteer

Thank Goodness for Simple Pleasures

Shoelaces. Feathers. Tiny fake mice. Small plastic balls with bells inside. It doesn’t take much to get most cats interested in playing with such toys. Especially if it’s moving, they’re likely to swat, stalk then pounce, bite or roll around with it. We have numerous kittens at the rescue now.

The other day a shiny, crinkly toy was tossed into one group. The quickest grabbed it and the rest crazily ran around following — up, down and all around until it was dropped. Many of the babies can’t be touched yet, but moving a finger toward them gets them curious, tilting their heads, eyes growing big as they climb or reach out a paw to get closer.

Our website features videos of cats of various ages having fun — including Lily, Snoopy, Stripes, Tango and others. Also visit PAF’s Cattery Page for interesting info. about friendly felines needing homes! Here, see video of a Calico named Adorable (at left) playing with yarn pom-poms donated by a woman who made them; as well as Boots, a cute male cat (top video, above left), fascinated by a dog leash put on the floor by a volunteer taking a break from walking dogs.

Speaking of dogs, plenty of the rescue’s adoptables have favorite activities, too. Shannon, Sonic and Foxtrot are boys who love fetching or catching stuffed toy basketballs. Otis likes belly-crawling on grass. Jonesy will happily splash in a small pool put in the play yards on hot days. We know Charity is happy when she zips around in tight circles. Meanwhile, Mary Anne the German Shepherd puppy and Foxy the senior German Shepherd, both enjoy watching their toys float in water. Thank goodness for simple pleasures! LK, volunteer

Unusual Traits Will Make You Look Twice

Wait — is that Dachshund missing a leg? From a distance, a small red dog is being walked. It seems to tilt down and sideways with each step, but is moving at a steady pace. It’s Daisy! Despite her handicap (it’s believed she was hit by a car, leading to an amputation), she gets around and even jumps just fine. Such animals called “tripods” definitely have to try harder than “regular” pets to do regular things.
Lily's shape attracts attention.

Mickey
the three-legged cat is also available. He seems to lay down all day just out of reach. But a peek through a window after closing often reveals him leaping from high hiding places to eat or drink on the ground, then climbing straight up very fast on the other side!

Other cats here get attention for their looks, too. Lily the tabby is so round, joking people like to guess she swallowed a bowling ball. Adorable and Cheerios have extra toes on their front paws, like tiny thumbs; they’re known as polydactyl cats, or “mitten kittens.” Guests ask to shake their hands. Meanwhile, three male cats have a crinkly ear across from their normal ear: Earl, Butterscotch and Edward.

Unique hair highlights Brooke's eyes.
Both tips of Bradley the German Shepherd’s cute ears curl forward, unlike the breed’s typical erect ears. His face coloring kind of gives him the appearance of having thick eyebrows. Bradley, Roxie and Foxtrot are all big Shepherds who probably near a pony in size.

Roxy and Black Jack (Poms), Rusty, Ethan and Champ are among our fuzziest dogs. However, shy Lizzy takes the prize. Her longer, wavy, black-and-white hair prompts questions: Is there a dog under all that? Is that a new or different kind of sheepdog? And we can’t forget Brooke, a sweet Belgian Tervuren with distinctive tufts of blonde hair sticking out beneath her eyes. We’ve heard, “Are those real or pasted on?” and “How did that happen?”

Online searches for pets are convenient, but it’s more interesting meeting them live and up close!

*FOXTROT* The Neglected & Abandoned Shepherd

Oh My God! Oh My God! That was our reaction when we first laid eyes on this severely neglected and abandoned Shepherd we now call Foxtrot. Judging by the condition he was in, it was evident that this poor soul was confined somewhere, chained, and left to be consumed by external parasites, covering literally every inch of his body, including his eyes, nose, and ears.

Of course the first question that comes to mind is: Why? Why would anyone acquire a dog and end up treating it this way? Why? Although we will never know why...where...what or who, but one thing we do know is that life has not been kind to this stunning and regal looking Shepherd.

But luckily, this boy found his way to us and now we are doing everything possible to change the world for this beautiful angel, and show him that not all humans are evil....but most do care...we care!

Foxtrot has already been to our vet, has been groomed, and is currently receiving all the medical care that he needs, and will continue to do so until he is healthy, happy, and pain free.

We kindly ask that you keep Foxtrot in your thoughts; and any amount you can DONATE toward his recovery process would be greatly appreciated and much needed.

Please donate at: http://www.petadoptionfund.org/donation.html (please include note *Foxtrot*)
Thank you for taking the time to read Foxtrot's story. ~MB volunteer

Matchmaking Process Unpredictable But Worthwhile

These brothers were placed together!
For people choosing pets, the mutual attraction can be instant, or more involved. Last year, a man who came to look at Ada the Labrador after seeing her on our website declared, “I’ll take her!” when she approached with her tail wagging and rolled over for a belly rub. Last month, a cat named Zane convinced a woman to take him home by reaching out with a paw to stroke her grandson’s hair. Last week, young girls giggled at a Saint Bernard’s friendly slobber and got her to sit on command before telling their parents, “We want her!”

Both Jingles the pup and Dixie the Coonhound had numerous meet-and-greet sessions with other dogs before finding new families. The new owner of two kittens visited twice to decide to take them. Timing often plays a part; for instance, if you have an extended holiday off from work to get to know an animal addition, or if you’ve finally moved into a place with a big yard, or perhaps you need to wait until after remodeling the kitchen or returning from a trip, etc.|

Some visitors have voiced unique qualifications for dogs, including: will guard our horses but not get too close to them; will fit in the “U-shape” on the floor behind my truck’s driver’s seat; or a dog that “will eat what I make, because no one else in the family does.” Some potential cat adopters have requested one that will talk back, or “will watch my favorite TV shows with me.”

In any case, we always want a standout match for both sides. Come by soon to make it happen! — L.K., volunteer

Terrific Twosome Seek Real Kindness, Forever Family

It’s not easy to overcome being miserable, mistreated and misunderstood for a long time. Just ask Dolby and Gina, Akita mixes who seem unsure of what toys are and behave wary around new people. If this attractive pair could talk, they may share a sad story of always being scared of their first owner then always tied up by the second. Criticism was constant, barking led to smacks on the head, and escaping was a desperate way of searching for better lives. Gina went missing for a full month once, before miraculously reappearing in the backyard.
After initially brought to us due to a move, then returned some years later because the next adopter lost her house, both dogs were petrified — especially the girl. The sister and brother, also named Bubba and Sweet Pea in the past, preferred hiding behind things or crouching in corners to walking on-leash or interacting with volunteers. They’ve since made progress, but must stay together and do require experienced guardians/handlers. Also, no small pets, please.
Happiness is when these dogs dance around or stand on their rear toes, anticipating exploration of the neighborhood. They walk very well in sync with and alongside each other, often drawing attention and compliments. For fun, they jump on and tug each other’s hair when someone familiar approaches. Treats, brushing sessions and soft bedding are enjoyable offerings. To find out more or to meet this wonderful guy and gal, call or visit soon! We hope a match is made during this month that has a theme of finding true love. Watch their video! Barely Surviving Mystery Cats Get Second Chance

This brave parent and her offspring needed protection.
She heard the loud and long scream in the early morning, when it was still dark outside. The Porter Ranch resident awoke quickly, immediately worried for the scared family of cats her dog had recently discovered behind a backyard bush. Turns out, the brave young mother cat was trying to protect four tiny, vulnerable babies from a pair of hungry, close coyotes the woman was able to scare away. She and her husband had been feeding the homeless felines for a while, but as of yet had been unsuccessful in approaching or  capturing the group in order to save them. However, this lucky night, the terrified kitties ran in the home’s open rear doors ASAP when they had the chance and were guided inside.

Across the next weeks, the panicky, feral cats learned to trust their saviors, letting themselves be petted and even held. In fact, the mama liked attention so much, the couple thinks she may have been owned before but had been abandoned or left behind. Named Precious, she has a white mark on her chest and an absent ear tip near dots of missing hair, guessed to be the results of a predator's bite.
Now all are here, again facing another new environment, strangers and the unknown. Will each have enough confidence and good fate to become adoptable and secure someone's interest? Only time will tell. The two girls and two boys are: Panther (the biggest), Baby (smallest), Minnie (dark gray) and Lion King (longer hair than the others). Their rescuers say after getting over initial fear, all these "angels" enjoy belly rubs. Baby disappeared for a while but returned, Lion King "acts tough but loves human touch," sweet Minnie is playful, and Panther is friendly.
