Big Beauty Seeks Strong, Savvy, Sensitive Owner

     No doubt about it, Samantha the young Saint Bernard is large and lovely. But depression often sinks in when she realizes being the “one and only” of a new owner who will be a “forever friend” is still just a dream. When still a puppy, Samantha lost the only home she ever had when she got dumped at the shelter. Not much later, she lost the only family she still had when her brother (and kennel roommate) got adopted. Soon, Sam lost the only way she could possibly be saved, too: more time to be seen as available and chosen by a special someone. Thank goodness, Pet Adoption Fund rescued this dog just before euthanasia.
     Samantha enjoys walks, tummy rubs, squeaky toys and running in circles or back and forth with a playmate. She needs a household without other pets or kids. We’re hoping to place Sam with someone familiar with the St. Bernard breed and tendencies—someone strong enough to handle her smartly and safely, yet sensitive enough to always be kind and patient as she learns expectations. Our Wonderful Cats Wonder How Long it Takes?!

We are always surprised and disappointed when visitors say they didn’t know we have cats and kittens on-site, available for adoption.
In fact, both a cat and dog have appeared in our logo and on the side of our building for decades! At any given time, many cats of different ages, sizes, personalities and colors are here to see, get to know, and take home if it’s a match! That includes numerous singles, siblings, friends, pairs, some who must be your only pet, plus a few special-needs cases.

If you can’t own one, please consider volunteering. The kitties love attention, brushing, cuddling or playing with toys.
Socializing the more shy cats boosts their chances of being adopted.

For Future Generations, Neuter and Spay Must be the Way

All of us growing kids need homes ASAP! Can you help?

Our hearts sank when we peeked in the cardboard box. Yes, the fuzzy puppies are adorable. No, these mixed-breed babies don’t know their existence was unplanned, unwanted or both. Another reminder of the pet overpopulation problem—a continuing dilemma. Spaying and neutering is the solution, but without question it’s just not happening, or not happening enough! Too many young, well-behaved companion animals are among millions euthanized every year because shelters and rescues don’t have room, numerous owners and breeders are irresponsible, and there simply aren’t enough homes. So each week that passes, this situation becomes more worrisome. These little Jindo/Labrador Retriever girls and boys have no names at this point, but lots of potential. Hopefully, the mommas won’t have another litter. Hopefully, the outcome will be loving families and successful adoptions, not more sad statistics. In this case, the careless actions of one irresponsible owner with two Jindo females has plenty of people trying to save and place 10 puppies. Spaying/neutering has health and behavioral benefits, as well as low-cost options.

Unpredictable Plot Continues for Plucky Pup

Like a memorable movie, this story has drama, horror, a hero and an ending that creates questions. Like how despite progress in technology and humanity, this kind of thing still happens. A young, gentle, medium-sized dog (since named Oakley) had been hanging around a Midwest truck stop for months. He was tired, afraid, starving, flea-infested, and miraculously had not been hit or run over when he approached a dog of one of the drivers. When that man asked for details, he was told: the small town had no local animal control or pound; no one cared about the dog or knew of any owner; and he should shoot it because that would be the next step anyway. Appalled and fearful for the dog’s future, the man immediately gave it shelter in his truck. He contacted a friend involved with animal rescue in California to arrange possible assistance. Fortunately, the friend is a resourceful volunteer with Pet Adoption Fund. Across numerous states and after arrival, Oakley was given food, water and needed medical aid. **UPDATE (Sept. 25): It's just been discovered that Oakley has a bullet in his neck that can't be removed.** Already, his personality has earned rave reviews. Will this sweet boy be adopted soon? Can Oakley ever forget his traumatic recent past? What made him choose to follow and trust the only person that decided to offer support that fateful day? Stay tuned…
Update as of 10-10-12:  Oakley has found a happy home, but the bullet will always be a reminder of his traumatic past.

Albert the cat, age 6, is a big sweetie.

They sit and they wait and they hope. But some animals at the rescue keep getting passed by. These extra-special yet overlooked dogs and cats really want and need homes, because they have much love to give and have been here too long. Will they finally get that chance Sept. 17-23, promoted as Adopt-A-Less-Adoptable-Pet Week by Petfinder? Factors that can make different pets seem “less adoptable” than others include age, breed, size, coloring, personality and medical issues. Or, some are “too common” because there are always many of that type.

Sweet senior dogs Chrissy and Brittany are longtime best friends who need to stay together. Also meet Adam the affectionate Tabby and Juliana the svelte Siamese (on special diets); or any of the wonderful black kitties here. Remmy the adult Jack Russell Terrier (pictured at right) has weakening back legs, while Benny the blind Miniature Pinscher has diabetes. Survival is a question mark for abandoned pets

One was found whimpering in a crate left in a parking lot. Days later, another Pekingese was seen near trash bins in the scorching sun, too weak and ill to move. Infested by fleas and already showing white gums indicating dying blood circulation, that innocent victim of neglect didn’t make it. The small dog took its last breath on the way to the vet, a soft gasp after a losing struggle. Meanwhile, the Peke we named Mason (pictured, above left and above right) is still recovering. He was covered in ticks and matted hair, therefore battling risks of disease, anemia, even possible paralysis. After a long and complicated shave, Mason looks like he has extreme chicken pox (red scabs all over, no doubt itchy and painful). Maybe the owners of these dogs couldn’t afford treatment, or refused to provide needed care — or both. Receiving such animals is difficult because they are often afraid, in bad shape and require immediate medical aid. Thank you for supporting our rescue’s determined efforts to try to save and help heal so many.

Courageous canine still smiling despite setbacks

When a growth was spotted on Kirby’s eye, it was troubling news for the handsome American Eskimo/ Labrador Retriever mix. Luckily, expert surgery recently removed the tumor, but it meant losing the eye. Previously, before our rescue saved him, Kirby had already experienced some rough times. Golden-white and fluffy, Kirby is a memorable character with special potential. Hopefully, someone will give this boy a chance to experience love and contentment! Kirby is best suited for a quiet home, preferably with a female, and no kids please.
